What Happens To Water And Food In Our Stomach?
Whenever we put some food in our mouth, the digestive process starts. First, saliva is released into the mouth – when we chew food, it is mixed with saliva and digestive enzymes which help soften it. Once soft, the food continues to the digestive tract, where acids start decomposing it. Our digestive tract processed food in about 4 before it’s turned to liquid called chime. The chime then travels to the small intestine where all the nutrients from it are extracted.
On the other hand, water doesn’t stay around in our stomach for long. In fact, it travels through the GI tract for about 10 minutes. By drinking food with our meals, water goes through the digested food pretty quickly and then leaves the stomach. Contrary to what some experts might say, water won’t reduce the acidity in our stomach.
Our body is a complex machine – if the GI tract feels it can’t digest food, it raises the acidity and produces enzymes in order to break down that food. No matter how much water you drink during your meals, it won’t dilute the acids. Plus, water does get into our body with food – for example, citrus fruits contain 86% water, while cucumbers have an even higher amount. Some studies have found out that certain foods can reduce the acidity of our stomach, but everything goes back to normal pretty soon.
Liquids Don’t Have An Impact On Our Digestion
There’s really no scientific evidence which points out that liquids affect the speed of digestion. Water passes through our body so quickly that it simply doesn’t have the time to affect digestion. Drinking water with your meals won’t harm your digestion or health. In fact, water will help the softening process of the food you eat. However, you should drink it before swallowing food, as the process needs saliva that contains the enzymes necessary for breaking down the food later.
Water may actually be beneficial for the digestion if we drink it along our meals. A recent research discovered that slowly sipping water with your meals may actually slow down the eating process, which prevents overeating, one of the main factors for weight gain. You can even drink tea with your meals if that’s your thing – it won’t harm the digestion process.
Even the temperature of the liquids you drink with meals don’t affect the digestive process – it’s all just a myth! So, if you were worried about drinking water while eating, don’t be – it won’t harm your digestion or affect your health in any way.
