We’ve been on Earth for a long time. Life was roaming our planet for millions of years and imagining that we’re alone in this world is really nonsense. Aliens are probably out there in some galaxy, but today we’re going to talk about an Earth phenomenon that people call “alien”.
Rh-negative – what is it?
Although we imagine little green humanoids when we hear the word alien, the aliens are probably far closer to us than we think. They are probably just like you and me, with the exception of their blood being Rh-negative. Blood types are an indication of special markers in our blood. There are four of them in total – A, B, AB and O. Our red blood cells also have a protein called Rh on the surface, which can be divided into Rh-positive and Rh-negative. Rh-negative is really mysterious and even scientists haven’t been able to crack it up to now.
What so alien about Rh-negative?
The Rh-negative factor is pretty uncommon, with no more than 15% of American adults having it. If you’re wondering what’s so alien about it, it’s the genetic laws. These laws say that, excluding mutations, we inherit traits passed down from our ancestors. If the theory about humans and primates is true our blood should reflect it. All monkeys are Rh-positive, yet some people are Rh-negative. The highest concentration of people with Rh-negative factor live in the Basque area in Spain (30%).
Where did these people come from?
Although the origin of these people is definitely up for debate, scientists say that they’ve been around for more than 35 000 years. There’s a lot we don’t know about this type of blood, but we do know at least something. When a woman with Rh-negative blood has a baby with Rh-positive type of blood, her body registers the baby as a foreign object. The factors don’t mix, resulting in the creation of antibodies in the mother which are supposed to fight the “threat”. Luckily, medicine has a treatment which neutralizes them to keep the child safe.
Some scientists believe that Rh-negative people can also fight certain diseases. For example, they can handle the Toxoplasma parasite better than the rest of us. This parasite is extremely dangerous for the brain, especially for babies. Since science hasn’t unlocked the mysteries surrounding this type of blood, maybe it should be investigated further as it can hold the key for certain ailments.
