According to a recent Japanese study, taking vitamin D supplements can cut down the risk of flu in children by an incredible 50%. All the children were given a dose of 1200 IU of vitamin D per day for 3 months. During the first month, the vitamin D group was falling ill just as often as the placebo group. The condition improved in the second month as the children already had a nice supply of vitamin D in their blood. The scientists concluded that the supplement reduced the risk of the flu by up to 50%, compared to the 8% reduction by antiviral and antibiotic drugs.
In general, antivirals are more effective than vaccines against the flu, but both of them fail when put up against vitamin D. Plus, antiviral meds are usually expensive, while vitamin D supplements can be found for cheap. Plus, they offer additional benefits such as lower risk of bone fractures, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and various infections as well.
The Japanese study also supports the theory that low levels of vitamin D in the blood are linked to a higher risk of flu in the winter months. As we said, vitamin D stimulates the immune system and activates the white blood cells, effectively disabling viruses.
